Different Forms Of Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine comes in various forms. Because of its wide span, it is difficult to confine it into just one definition. The important thing to remember is that these treatments refer to therapies that produce medicine-like effects with minimal backing of traditional medicine. Find out which one suits your needs best.

Hypnosis - Also known as hypnotherapy, this is the method of inducing a dream- or trance-like state. The patient falls under deep relaxation. Hypnosis is done to treat disorders caused by emotional or psychological priors. Today, it is recognized by many in the medical community as a legitimate healing tool. Even if its exact methodologies are a mystery to science, it is often used as a part of a bigger team such as in medical, dental, and psychological therapies.

Acupuncture - Acupuncture is a set of procedures used to stimulate specific body points. The most popular kind of acupuncture involves the use of thin needles that penetrate the skin, either through electrical stimulation or as facilitated by a practitioner. Millions of Americans use this treatment modality every year. Management of depression and chronic pain are some of its uses.

Balneotherapy - This is also called hydrotherapy. It involves using water for therapeutic effects. This form of alternative medicine is founded on the belief that water is beneficial for the skin and can treat different conditions (ranging from acne to swelling to pain to anxiety). The therapist uses douches, mudpacks, and wraps in order to reap the rewards of water. This method also helps improve the persons immune system.

Biofeedback - This technique lets people control processes inside the body that are normally involuntary. Things like blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and muscle tension. This aims to improve health conditions, such as chronic pain, hypertension, and headaches. Patients are taught relaxation techniques and undergo mental exercises with the help of a therapist. During the first few sessions, electrodes will be attached to the persons skin to gather initial bodily states. Over the course of treatment, the techniques can eventually be performed on ones own, and without equipment. The key component for biofeedbacks success lies in relaxation.

Chiropractic - Chiropractic medicine is more common and widely accepted today by the medical community. Many consider it as a complementary medicine instead of an alternative medicine. It concentrates on nervous system and musculoskeletal problems (neck, arm, leg, back, joint, and head pain). Spinal manipulation is the most common chiropractic procedure. It is more loosely called an adjustment in lay mans terms. This procedure applies controlled force from the chiropractors hands towards hypomobile joints. This is done because the joints movements have become limited as surrounding tissues suffered from repeated stress or from injuries. Adjustments in the affected area will restore the joints mobility and help loosen muscles. This aims to let tissues properly heal and the pain to ultimately vanish.

There are many more forms of alternative medicine. Some are more controversial than others. To this day, a lot still lack scientific evidence to support the legitimacy of their practice. Still, many Americans resort to alternative medicine therapies each year, proving that despite the scarce medical data to show their efficacy, a lot of people believe in the benefits that they can get from them.
