Ocular Allergies

Ocular allergies are also known as eye allergies or allergic conjunctivitis. This condition occurs when eyes react to some irritants. The immune system forces the eye to produce a substance called histamine in reaction to those allergens due to which the eyelids and conjunctivitis (the clear white front are of the eye) becomes red and swollen. As a result of the feeling of itching and burning also starts. Usually, people have seasonal allergies and they appear and disappear as the season changes. Mostly people who have nasal allergies suffer from this problem. Sometimes there can be other reasons like the allergy to smoke, perfumes, dust, etc.

The symptoms include redness, swelling, itching, feeling of burning or tearing and sensitivity to light. In the case of having a nasal allergy as well, additional symptoms may include running nose, sneezing, itching in the nose, headache, and cough. Some people inherit this problem from their parents. However, these allergies are not contagious and do not spread from one person to another.

People who know they are allergic to some allergens must take precautions to avoid contact with them in order to prevent its development. During high pollen times, doors and windows must be kept close. If you are a nature lover or loves gardening but suffer from this problem, make sure to cover your nose and eyes properly during your exposure to the allergy threats. One must wear sunglasses when going out to avoid contact with allergens. If someone is allergic to pets, keep distance with them. Avoid company of smokers while they are smoking.

Artificial tears and other eye drops are available for soothing the eyes if symptoms appear. It is better to visit your doctor in case of allergy symptoms appear. The doctor will confirm that these symptoms are due to eye allergy, not any other problem, and will also prescribe proper medicine or eye drops for it. Usually, the doctor recognizes that it is an allergy by symptoms only but in some cases, he may perform some test in order to verify the cause. Using a slit lamp, scraping of conjunctivitis or testing with an environmental allergen are common methods used by a doctor for verification.

Although the symptoms of ocular allergies are very annoying but they are no threat to the eyesight of a person. They might cause temporary inconvenience and discomfort but disappear with time as nothing happened ever. You can get more lasik correction info at lasiksurgerydb.com
